Heavy Media Separator

Overview

The BMPE Heavy Media Separator (Cross Flow Separator) is a hydraulic classifier that operates on the teeter-bed (fluidized bed) principle to efficiently separate solids based on size, shape, and density. Engineered to deliver sharp separations, it provides a low-maintenance, high-efficiency solution for gravity separation and size classification.

The BMPE Heavy Media Separator (Cross Flow Separator) uses an upward water flow to create a teeter-bed of suspended solids inside the separator, where particles settle according to their terminal settling velocities. Finer, lighter particles are elutriated into the overflow, while coarser, denser particles pass through to the underflow.

A key factor in its performance is the top-fed slurry design, which minimizes turbulence and ensures stable, repeatable separation conditions. The bed of solids behaves like a fluid, with particle interactions carefully balanced by hydrodynamic forces.
